In overseas, since the era of modernism various programs leading the role of archiving films and several media arts as well as the distribution have been operated with the support from individuals, groups, and government. MOMA of New York, Montevideo of Amsterdam, EAI of USA, and Lux of England are such examples. For those who would like to discuss the new video art, it would be very delightful to see the appearance of IASmedia in our domestic environment where such archive is very hard to come by.

Following is a written interview with Kang, Yoo-Mi, coordinator at IAS media
_ What are IASmedia’s program and your role as a coordinator?
In order to vitalize Korean video art scene, Insa Art Space of Korea Art Council started a special program called IASmedia since August, 2006 for establishing and distributing single channel video archive. This program has a long-term plan for alternatively energizing the domestic scene of video art through establishing video archive and collection, protecting the distribution environment of video and digital media, and concentrating on distribution home and abroad.
The coordinator researches for potential artists who can donate their works in preview versions in DVD, CD, VHS formats. Coordinator then establishes and expands the video archive and encourages visitor’s perusal. Coordinator selects Korean video art works eligible for yearly distribution and introduces them home and abroad by various methods such as , distributing to art museums, art galleries, theaters, festivals for immediate screening, distributing to school libraries without immediate plan for screening, and distributing to public TV stations, organizational archives for agents. For the last year, coordinator had introduced domestic as well as foreign video art works to the general public through one or two IASmedia organized screenings.
_ What is your opinion on gallery exhibition vs. theater screening of media art?
It is impossible to simply bisect gallery and theater. Rather, theater screening can be used as an alternative choice distinctive from viewing a media art at the existing galleries. IASmedia held two screenings at two theaters this year, and the responses were reasonably good.
_ In case of overseas, it is normal for private organizations to archive and distribute. What do you think of charging admission fee of screenings by government agencies?
