Platform 2009 has been designed to propose a “platform” on which to experiment the diverse ways art can be linked to our real lives in cities instead of remaining as “art for art’s sake.” In particular, this year’s event explores the relationship between art and cities under the three key ideas of ‘public,’ ‘space,’ and ‘life,’ and seeks to make statements on such issues as redefining the concept of ‘public,’ expanding the concept of public art, participation of viewers, communication with communities, reflecting the region- and site-specificity of places, exploring the functional nature of art, combining art and life, and criticisms on institutions. Thus, unlike previous years since its inauguration in 2006, this year’s Platform will extend the exhibition venues across various locations within cities rather than limit itself to the inside of museums and galleries. It will also convert the way the audience views art by having art go out and meet its public in everyday spaces rather than invite it into exhibition spaces. Platform 2009 will serve as a crossroad of the multiple paths that will open up the boundaries between art and cities. It hopes to offer an occasion to reflect on the social role of art and propose a new vision of art for communities.
