An example that illustrates the development of basic conditions in creativity in domestic art scene is the increase in creative studios. Residency programs that started in central areas of Seoul are spreading to the regions surrounding the metropolis. In the case of Incheon Art Platform which claims to support the multi culture and art space that opened last September provides the space for artists in the cultural sector, as well as actively funding the research and curator sector. Remembering its history as the first port city in Korea, Incheon Art Platform is a newly invented space that has reconstructed modern buildings and the surrounding architecture into galleries and studios. With its architectural narrative, Incheon Art Platform is definitely worth the recognition for its outstanding domestic residency building. This is especially true as famous so-called Chinese attractions are clustered as a cultural tourist site in the immediate vicinity of the building.

The flexibility in space can be anticipated to contribute not only to the Incheon area but also to domestic art culture. The first residency artists of Incheon Art Platform held an exhibition under the title “Yiap” on January 11th. Introduced in the exhibition were works by media artist Koh Chang-sun, animation artist Kim Hye-ran, Chung So-jung who presented charcoal drawing animation, Park Sang-hee who depicts familiar objects of everyday life, and Chae Ji-yong whose research-based works cite the area’s collective and private memories.

Fujii Rai, a Musashino Art University student, was the only participating international artist. Unsophisticated study-like landscapes similar to traditional landscape painting are placed on the easel in a seemingly more or less unfashionable installation method, but as a contemporary art practice that reaches the heights of refinement, such analogue method of image and installation method doesn’t seem to be so dishonest in the sense that it allows an experience of diversity in viewing for the audience.
