At the movie Oldboy by Chan Wook Park, the main character later comes to know that his being locked up for years was because he witnessed an incestuous relationship of his schoolmate. Behind the long lost memories of the past and history which is linked to the revenge, the core of Oldboy, which ultimately destroyed a man
s life, there were the boys from the faded memories.

One can also find adolescent boys in Hyun Taek Cho
s photographs. Building upon the frequently cited phrase in ones schooldays by the tutors, Boys, be Ambitious, the artist brings his own past into the picture. Rather than interpreting his work which childhood memories are built upon a picture one finds by accident as an extension of fantasy, dream, everyday scene from the period, one could see it as being symbolic of a childhood generally shared by most people.

The background of the work does not portray gray-toned city but a provincial scene where the children are spending their usual routine, or a world they are dreaming of. The pink leaves flutter in the wind in the scene where the two children stand lips to lips, first experience with a college girl, appearing as if commanding an army of gold bugs, a boy mimicked a gun-shot suicide for fun, friends relaxing in the grass, and two kids playing musical instruments under the big tree. All these seem like a scene from a movie, a figment from a fantasy world, which appear to defy the taboos of the real world.

For kids of the cities who cannot afford to enjoy their time due to the enormous academic pressure, those idyllic images may only exist as image. Whether it is just an imagination or an actual reality which comes with many restraints, the boys in the picture are only testing their freewill. In the Korean pre-college education environment, the freewill of the kids
skipping school and just relaxing on the grass may seem impossible in reality. However, kids must not be confined to the oppressing gray buildings and somewhat dull surrounding nature. They must have hope and ambition represented by the verdurous woods of the nature. This is what draws the attention from Chos photographs.
