‘Silent Movie Theater’ sector recreates Korea’s first movie theater Wongaksaⓒ2008 Korean Film Archive

Korea’s first film museum opened its doors last May 9, 2008 within the Korea Film Archive building in Sangam-dong, Seoul. The Korean Film Museum opened after the Film Archive moved its location to this new building. Considering the museums already in existence in other more developed movie producing countries, Korea’s museum is somewhat late in coming, but it is expected to play numerous roles in the development of Korean movies.

The museum is composed of permanent and special exhibitions, and education programs. The major sector of the permanent exhibition is ‘Time Travel into Korean Movies’ where visitors can learn about the four eras of Korean movie history including Korea’s first movie “A Tale of Two Sisters”. ‘Silent Movie Theater’ sector recreates Korea’s first movie theater Wongaksa, set up during early 1900s, and allows the visitors to experience the movie culture of the time. Then there are also ‘Biographies of Actress’ and ‘Animation’. There are also special displays such as ‘Historical Drama’, which provides an insight into Korean historical dramas, and space for ‘Imagination’. Education programs provide tours of the museum and media education programs where participants can study the principles of film production and meet movie-related personalities.
