The 12th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival closed last July 27. Having opened its curtains on the 18th, this was a unique film festival that heated the already hot summer nights. Boasting of a ten-year history, this festival has survived numerous problems to presently enjoy the experiments carried out smoothly by the newly set-up organizing committee. The opening movie was the full-length animation “Waltz with Bashir” created by the Israeli director Ari Folman, and which participated at the Cannes Film Festival. Befitting the name of this famous documentary director, “Waltz with Bashir” is a documentary animation set in Israel about the war experienced by young people and human relationships. The newly installed category, Strange Hommage introduced the movies of great masters of world cinema from horrors to melodramas. Here, the horror movie “The Housemaid” directed by Kim Ki-young, which was a digital restoration projected supported by the World Cinema Foundation chaired by Martin Scorsese was shown. In addition, movies from diverse genres surpassing taboos and customs were introduced through categories like the Forbidden Zone, Ani Fanta, and World Fantastic Cinema. To close the festival, “Cyborg She” directed by Kwak Jae-yong, and which is considered as one of the ‘my girlfriend’ trilogy together with “My Sassy Girl” and “Windstruck”, was introduced.
