Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei

Born in 1957, the artist, curator and activist to represent China, Ai Weiwei carried out an exhibition representing China in the 12th Kassel Documenta in 2007. Rather than inviting artists, it was a project that invited ordinary Chinese citizens with almost no traveling experience, to stay in Kassel for a week. Such uniqueness and magnificent scale was worth the spotlight. Fairy Tale, which is a project that invited 1001 Chinese and turned into a film, roots from the background of the Kassel-born fairy tale brothers. The travelogue of the rural Chinese citizens who had never left their country, is captured into a video by Ai Weiwei.

Fairy Tale shows the itinerary of those who left their villages for the first time without even a passport, and records their personal experiences of culture shock as they arrive in Germany. While talking about the difficulties in the production of the 152 minute film, Ai Weiwei expresses that her intention was to deliver a fairytale-like story about art changing reality, by presenting the analogy of those who have never left their home country encountering the freedom of travel for the first time.
