Shon Kim(b.1972), the media artist who lives and works on drawing and experimental animation is more famous in abroad than inKorea. Especially, as if reflecting one of the trends of international Media Art, generalization of media artists' participation in film festivals, Kim also has held screenings and exhibitions at Slamdance Film Festival 2007, San Diego Asian Film Festival 2006, MoMa(NY). Studied Law in Korea, Kim expanded his realm by studying drawing and experimental animation at Chicago Art Institute in 2001 and Cal Arts in 2004. Kim said after finishing studies, her strong artistic impulse of escaping from conventional drawing method had been solidified through "the process of abstract drawing". His works, the outcome of the process, ignore the viewer's standardized expectation for seeing figures and lead us to the "Moving Painting" series. Kim's abstract animation film which starts only after finishing drawing is the result that can be achieved after entirely going through the process of change: from still -image to motion-image and then to time-image.

The figure of motion image reveals the passing-by ambiguous figure which is deformed or transformed. The figure that captures our gaze and the work method that separates act of hand from act of cognition like Live Painting, play the liberal rhythm of music running like water.

Shon Kim_Latent Sorrow 2005

Kim's masterpiece the "Latent Sorrow"(2005) in moving painting series, has been shown in number of film festivals and exhibitions since 2006. Also the young artist's hard networking rewarded him with many awards at international short film and experimental film festivals. Kim's works that have been introduced mostly through screenings in New York, Spain, London, Japan and Korea, was presented at the film festival sponsored by Kurosawa Akira Foundation.

Kim is appointed as a juror of animation in Slamdance Film Festival in 2008. In his moving painting series, all works form No.1 to No.9 are categorized in the genres of experimental animation or experimental film. No.10 is in the process. When we are talking about the distinguishing character of Kim's work, we cannot leave behind the miraculous audio effect, one of the important elements of media art. Artist's talent and passion for music which doesn't mind collecting and editing sounds by himself is one more attraction to appreciate Kim's film.

The "Moving Painting No.10" will be presented with the mysterious and unfamiliar background tone done by a music-performing artist couple in Spain. The historical meaning of Kim's works is they remind us of the tradition of animation films like Oscar Fishinger and Walter Ruttmann, the German abstract painter and avant-garde director of the "Opus Series" in the era of geometrical abstraction. I imagine the gentle rhythm of the ocean floating into the artist's studio in west California and wish it could inspire his works even brighter….  I am also looking forward to seeing the works filled with happy-life than inner sorrow.
