“Pop on web” is a show that exhibits the art works by the young artists working in the context of pop culture as the title presents. It aims to lead the audiences to reproduce their own artworks by means of manipulating the artists’ original images. The reconfigured images are going to be shown in the web gallery alongside the original artworks. This web project could be seen to be designed for extending the accessibility to the art and offering the opportunity of working in art for the web generation. Essentially, it tries to engage with this strong potential art consumer, encouraging them to be part of the creation of pop art.

 Yet there are doubts cast.

Firstly, it is seriously awkward to access the artist’s original works to be able to alter them. The visitors must register to the web gallery to even view the works and each artist’s page must be downloaded separately, which can be up to 4Mb to just view an image. Besides it requires the user to download a 20Mb picture each again if they want to play with it. This is not the end of the problems. You can not do anything with it if you do not have any 2D programmes on your personal computer. At this point, I do not see the use of a web gallery that offers nothing but inconvenience.

Secondly, it has not been publicized widely enough to let the amateur artists and public participate. Even if a few hyper arty kids could find the show, they would hardly reach to the glorious final moment of creation due to the bothering long process.

As a result, there is currently not a single piece of work by “a guest” artist on the web gallery. Nevertheless the show has been opened on the 13th November.

It should have put the simple drawing tool palette on the side along with the artists’ images on the web for the users to be able to alter them directly. Even a link to the basic drawing programme could be put on if they were not able to solve the technical problems.

There is a worry this web exhibition is likely to be added to the list of shows without participants which were mainly organized to encourage the public to play a part in.
